Empowering women, strengthening resilience

Fijian women are leading community resilience.
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Fiji, in partnership with UN Women, recently travelled across Fiji to witness the remarkable achievements of women-led resilience initiatives under the Women Influence and Inform Local Resilience Action Project (WIILRAP).
This initiative, part of the Women’s Resilience to Disasters (WRD) program, empowers women to lead disaster preparedness efforts and build sustainable livelihoods in their communities.
In Nasogowaluvu Settlement, Delainavesi, women proudly showcased their newly learned skills from the Value-Adding Training, presenting innovative products like Cassava Flour Sponge Cake, Tamarind Chutney, and Tomato Sauce. These creations not only promote climate-resilient crops like cassava but also enhance financial independence. The event also highlighted Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) training, where women shared how they are leading preparedness strategies to strengthen disaster resilience.
The journey continued to the remote villages of Matokana and Nawairabe in Navosa Province, where women’s groups have received solar freezers to improve disaster resilience and food security. These freezers have significantly reduced the need for costly market trips while providing opportunities for income generation.
Despite the challenges of isolation and limited resources, the women of Matokana and Nawairabe shared inspiring stories of perseverance, proving that investing in women-led disaster resilience initiatives leads to lasting impact.

In Koronubu, Ba, the Koronubu Multi-Ethnic Women’s Group showcased their resilience through a community nursery and greenhouse project. Despite heavy rains damaging their greenhouse, they adapted by planting outdoors and successfully harvesting cabbage for sale. Their dedication extends beyond farming—mothers work daily in the nursery, and even children are getting involved by lending a hand.
This initiative has been strengthened through partnerships with the Fiji Council of Social Services and the Divisional Council of Social Services, who play a crucial role in supporting women’s economic empowerment and community development.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to UN Women, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and all stakeholders who continue to support women’s empowerment and community resilience in Fiji,” ADRA Fiji shared on Facebook. “These stories of innovation, strength and perseverance reaffirm that when women lead, communities thrive!”
