School’s new toilets meet vital need

Students at Talakali Adventist Primary School in Solomon Islands now have access to a new sanitation block after years without adequate facilities.

The school, located in Langalanga Lagoon, Malaita Province, officially received the facility on October 14. It includes separate toilets for male and female students, female shower facilities and a ramp to improve accessibility.

The facilities will also support the wider community during disasters, when the school serves as an evacuation centre.

Church Agency Network Disaster Operation (CANDO) Solomon Islands coordinator Dominic Baona handed over the facility at a ceremony attended by Malaita Province Deputy Premier and Acting Premier Randol Sifoni, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) CANDO project manager Raynick Jack, school staff and community members.

School headmaster Warren Steven expressed his gratitude to the Australian Government, CANDO and ADRA Solomon Islands, noting that this was the first ablution block specifically provided for the school’s primary students.

Funded by the Australian Government through its Disaster READY program, the facility was supported by the CANDO consortium and implemented by ADRA Solomon Islands.

The project aims to improve sanitation and hygiene, provide a healthier learning environment and strengthen the community’s preparedness for disasters.
