“Mo-Mentous” challenge for men’s health
Growing a mo for a great cause.
A group of men who work at the Sydney headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the South Pacific are taking part in a “Mo-Mentous” challenge this November, joining the global Movember movement to raise awareness for men’s health.
Movember is an annual initiative encouraging men to grow moustaches throughout November to spark conversations and raise funds for men’s health issues, particularly mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1250 men’s health projects worldwide.
Property department leader Lorin Bradford is organising the team for the Adventist Church. It’s the second time he has participated in Movember. The first time was after a good mate died by suicide. “It broke me at the time,” he shared. “I think it’s really important for blokes to look after each other and look after themselves. It’s also a good time to get your bloods done, get your skin checked and to remind people to go to the doctor.”
For colleague Paul Rubessa, the cause is also deeply personal. “Over 26,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. Sadly my dad was one of those this year and we lost him just a month ago—so go and get checked.”
The team is hoping to raise at least $1000 for the cause.
