Celebrating culture and community

Harmony Day was celebrated by students at Central Coast Adventist School in Erina (New South Wales) on Friday, March 21.

Students from Pre-Kindy to Year 6 marked the day by dressing in orange, the theme colour of Harmony Day, or by wearing their family’s traditional cultural attire. Countries represented included Poland, Iran, Japan, Germany, Malta, Solomon Islands, Ireland, Portugal, Cambodia and Greece.

The students also participated in show-and-tell activities, bringing items of cultural significance to share with their classmates. In the primary office, a Lego map was displayed, with stickers placed to highlight the various nations that school families are connected to.

Harmony Day is an Australia-wide event held each year to embrace the cultural diversity that makes up the nation. This year’s theme was “Harmony—we all have a role to play”.

“Respect is one of our four school values and that’s emphasised on a day like Harmony Day where we acknowledge the different cultures in our community and learn from one another to create greater respect and understanding,” said primary school chaplain Jessica Corker.
