A sanctuary for dementia patients

A new space designed to enhance the quality of care for dementia patients has opened at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, NSW.

The Rosella Activity Room aims to create a calming and supportive environment that caters to the unique needs of patients living with dementia.

“We know that coming into an acute hospital setting can escalate the impacts of a cognitive impairment on patients, their families and their care team,” said Adventist HealthCare CEO Brett Goods. “So it’s important we try to where we can work with families and patients to reduce the impact that that stress causes.”

The Rosella Activity Room is equipped with engaging activities that promote cognitive stimulation, social interaction and emotional wellbeing. The room features soft lighting, comfortable furnishings and sensory tools that help reduce anxiety and agitation.

Dr Ketan Bhatt, a leading figure in the hospital’s dementia care program, expressed his optimism about the positive impact of the new room “This space is not just about providing activities; it’s about creating an environment where patients can feel secure, valued and engaged,” he said.

”The activities we will offer are designed to stimulate the mind, foster social connections and reduce the stress that often accompanies dementia. We believe this room will greatly enhance our patients’ quality of life.”
