Adventure of a lifetime

Sydney Adventist Hospital anaesthetist Dr Gurdial Singh has embarked on an adventure of a lifetime: a trek to Everest Base Camp.

The incredible trek to the base of Mt Everest was not just about reaching new heights but to raise essential funds to upgrade the simulation centre in the San’s Clinical Education Centre. The simulation centre provides life-like scenarios where medical students, nurses and doctors can practise and perfect their skills in a safe, controlled environment.

Dr Singh’s ascent saw him traverse through picturesque Sherpa villages, lush forests and over suspension bridges. Highlights included breathtaking views of the Himalayas—Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and Ama Dablam.

“Each of the stops along the way reveals a piece of Nepal’s rich cultural tapestry,” Dr Singh said. “Standing at the foothills of the mighty Everest, the highest pinnacle on Earth, is an experience that is unforgettable.”

Dr Singh said the last part of the trek was tough, becoming more challenging and exhausting especially at higher altitudes above 4900 metres.

“With decreased oxygen levels, the nights especially being very cold and basic accommodation, it is a struggle to get much-needed sleep at night,” he said.

Reflecting on his achievement, Dr Singh acknowledges that the trek requires grit, determination and preparation. But all the hard work was worth it when he witnessed the awe-inspiring sunset over majestic Everest.
